‘Suicide by Cop’: D.A. Releases Frantic Dispatch Audio over Shooting Spree Against Police

On Thursday, the Dauphin County District Attorney’s Office released the frantic audio concerning the shooting spree against cops in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Authorities said Ahmed El-Mofty opened fire on cops in a shooting spree on Friday, leaving one trooper injured.

“The Public is reminded to use discretion when listening to this audio,” they said.

In the audio, officers can be heard trying to communicate amid the spree.

“It sounds like suicide by cop,” an official said. “Suicide by cop.”

The investigation is ongoing, and D.A.’s office asked the public to submit tips online, or over the phone via 1-800-call-FBI.

In a press conference last week, District Attorney Ed Marsico said El-Mofty shot at a Pennsylvania Capitol police officer, but missed. 30 minutes later, he opened fire at a state trooper, injuring her. She survived, and fled. He chased her in to the Allison Hill neighborhood, where he shot at two cops, Marsico said. They fired back, killing him.

Reporters at the time asked if El-Mofty had links to terrorism (he was a U.S. citizen born in Egypt). Authorities said that’s not the case. Investigator s have yet to settle on a specific motive, but court records obtained by Penn Live showed that El-Mofty, a divorcee, had child custody problems with his ex. Marsico said Thursday that El-Mofty’s relatives claimed the alleged shooter was depressed due to money problems, and isolation from his family. He said there was no evidence that El-Mofty had links to terrorist groups, such as ISIS.

Last Saturday, a statement from the Department of Homeland Security called the shooting a “terror attack”, but did not detail alleged links between El-Mofty and any group.
