The kidnapping trial of South Carolina woman Tammy Moorer continues Thursday in a Horry County courtroom. Prosecutors say Moorer was involved in the kidnapping 20-year-old Heather Elvis in December 2013, along with her husband, Sidney Moorer.
Elvis was known to be alive on December 18, 2013, the day before her car was found abandoned in a parking lot. After the vehicle was discovered, she was reported missing. In the months that followed, police investigated and eventually apprehended the Moorers and searched their home. Tammy and Sidney Moorer were initially both charged with murder, but those charges were dropped in 2016 leaving counts of kidnapping and conspiracy as the remaining charges.
Sidney Moorer already faced a trial of his own, but it ended in a hung jury. Now he’s waiting for a second trial, as Tammy faces her trial. Mr. Moorer is expected to be called to testify against Tammy in this case.
Prosecutors say Elvis’ disappearance came after Sidney and Heather Elvis had an affair, which ended months before she vanished. During his trial, witnesses said that at one point Elvis showed up for work with a black eye and had varying excuses for how she got hurt. They also said Heather might have been pregnant. Prosecutors believe that the possible pregnancy may have been the motivation for the kidnapping.
On Monday, the court heard testimony from Dennis Hart, kitchen manager at the Tilted Kilt, where Elvis worked. Hart said that he remembered Elvis’ black eye and how there were different stories attached to it. He also recalled Tammy Moorer asking him over the phone to fire Elvis, and that Moorer claimed Elvis was spreading a rumor that she was pregnant with Sidney’s child. Hart stated that he declined to fire Elvis, who was a valued employee.
