Opening Statements:

The kidnapping trial of Tammy Moorer is set to begin on Tuesday in Horry County, South Carolina. Moorer is charged in the disappearance of Heather Elvis. The 20-year-old woman vanished in December 2013. Watch the trial live in the player above.

Elvis was last heard from on December 18, 2013, and her car was found the next day, abandoned near a boat landing. That’s when she was reported missing. Roughly two months into the investigation, in February 2014, police apprehended the Moorers and searched their home.

Tammy’s husband, Sidney Moorer, was also charged with kidnapping, and faced a separate trial that ended in a hung jury. Prosecutors said he lured Elvis to a location in South Carolina against her will and took her, after an affair between the two had ended. Assistant solicitor Martin Spratlin said in his opening statement that Moorer “set a trap” for Elvis.

Witnesses said during Sidney’s trial that in October 2013, after Elvis and Moorer’s relationship ended, she came in to work with a black eye, but had varying excuses for how it happened. They said Elvis was afraid of Tammy Moorer, who allegedly harassed Elvis on the phone. Witnesses also said they Elvis may have been pregnant.

The couple had initially faced murder charges, but those were later dropped in 2016. Prosecutors may call Sidney Moorer to the stand during Tammy Moorer’s trial. Mr. Moorer was convicted of obstruction of justice in 2017 and was sentenced to ten years in prison. He still awaits a second trial for the kidnapping charge.
