Prison Guard Stabbed When Inmates Attack (VIDEO)

A corrections officer at Santa Fe’s New Mexico State penitentiary was stabbed in the head multiple times during an attack carried out by two inmates earlier this month. Authorities told local KOAT that Joe Martinez and  Lorenzo Martinez were undergoing a routine pat-down as inmates were let out of their cells for recreational time, when they jumped Officer Allen Rico, stabbing him in the head with a homemade shiv.

Another guard, Officer Dominic Yara, responded and used pepper spray, while a third officer fired bean bags. Yara also suffered cuts to his face before the inmates gave up.

Video showed Officer Rico getting away from the scene, leaving a trail of blood on the prison floor. He required stitches for his head wounds.

According to an incident report, the inmates could be guilty of attempted murder, but they have not been charged with any crimes for the incident at this time.
