‘That’s How People Like You Get Shot’: White Teacher on Leave for Allegedly Threatening Black Student in Class

A Georgia teacher is on leave pending a school investigation after video surfaced where he appears to give an explosive reaction to a student. April Carr told local WSB-TV that her son and others were laughing in class, when Rockdale Career Academy teacher Paul Hagan made a racially charged statement to the black student.

In the video, the teacher can be heard saying,:

Don’t smile at me, man, okay? That’s how people like you get shot. I got a bet. I bet by the time you’re 21 somebody gonna put a bullet right through your head. Okay. And it might be me the one who does it.

Car posted video of the incident on Facebook, commenting, “I am outraged. I will not stop until he is removed from teaching and held accountable.

She says Hagan later apologized to her son for his comment, explaining that he was upset that the 17-year-old student wasn’t living up to his potential.

An apology isn’t enough for Carr, though. “I want him fired. And I want him fired and I want charges pressed against him,” she said,. She called Hagan’s remarks “a terroristic threat on my son’s life that I definitely don’t take lightly,” and she has already filed a police report.

Carr claimed that if it was her son who made these remarks, he would have been arrested.
