Details are slowly getting out regarding an altercation that reportedly took place at an Atlantic City casino over the weekend, involving the city’s mayor, a city councilman, and three unidentified individuals.
The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s office announced in a statement that they are investigating the matter, which they simply described as “an incident.”
Atlantic County First Assistant Prosecutor Cary Shill said in a statement that the matter, which involved Mayor Frank Gilliam, Atlantic City Councilman Jeffree Fauntleroy II, and three others, “is currently being reviewed.”
That incident is now being reported as a fight that broke out in the parking lot outside the Haven nightclub at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino early Sunday morning. Philadelphia’s ABC6 viewed video of the incident, describing it as “a violent altercation in which punches were thrown.” According to the Press of Atlantic City, the fight reportedly lasted about 45 seconds, out of 10 minutes of video footage.
Councilman Fauntleroy downplayed the incident, which he referred to as a “misunderstanding,” according to ABC6.
“There was no security involved. There were no cops involved. There was a brief argument and verbal disagreement with those who actually worked at Haven. That happened. We left and went home.” He did note, however, “People don’t like people standing up for themselves around here.”
Mayor Gilliam told the Press of Atlantic City, “I’m going to hold my comments until my attorney and the law enforcement people do this because I’m not even sure why you would have access to a videotape.”
He remained quiet on the matter when approached by a reporter from ABC6 on Monday, but reportedly had what looked like a black eye.
