Cops in Davis, California are looking into who rubbed bacon on a door handle at a local mosque, broke windows, and vandalized several bikes.
The Sacramento Valley chapter of the Council of American-Islamic Relations claim it happened early Sunday morning. Surveillance footage purportedly shows a woman performing the act, they said in a statement. They’re now offering $1,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction. The Davis Police Department confirmed that yes, a woman “used an unknown type device to shatter 6 window panes” at the building, left strips of bacon on the door handle, and vandalized two bikes nearby.
From their official statement:
The suspect is described as a white female adult, between 25-35 years old, 5’4″-5’8″ tall and approximately 160-180 lbs. The suspect has red/brown wavy hair and was seen wearing beige hightop shoes, gray or blue tight fitting pants, an off-white vest and an unknown color shirt with an unknown logo. The suspect also wore a black hat with an unknown logo.
You can see surveillance footage above, as obtained by The Bradenton Herald. California’s hate crime statues include protections based on religion. This is the second time in as many months that this mosque, The Islamic Center of Davis, faced harassment. They got a letter in December which said that then-President-elect Donald Trump was going to commit a genocide against Muslims.
“He’s going to do to you Muslims what Hitler did to the Jews,” the letter stated. Other mosques in California and six additional states got identical messages, The Associated Press reported.
Police have not linked the Sunday incident with the letter.
