A startling incident in a Utah courtroom involved a man taking extreme measures in an apparent attempt to escape. Christopher Clay Rudd was sitting handcuffed, appearing in court because he allegedly failed to undergo court-ordered treatment, when he suddenly made a daring, albeit unsuccessful, break for the exit … which was one floor below.
Clearly, Rudd didn’t want to be at the Spanish Fork courthouse, as security video released on Thursday showed him get up, bolt out of the courtroom towards a second floor balcony, and tumble head first over the railing. Officers below could be seen scrambling trying to catch him.
They didn’t make it in time.
Rudd survived the fall, but a court spokesperson said he suffered a broken leg and pelvis, as well as a fractured skull. Police said it was not clear whether he was trying to hurt himself.
He is now due back in court on May 21. Rudd could face additional charges for the escape attempt.
