Video Shows Nanny Assaulting Toddler with Curling Iron, Police Say

A mother in Baldwin, New York says a nanny burnt her 2-year-old son with a curling iron. On purpose. Manhattan resident Nosipho Nxumalo, 21, has pleaded not guilty to two counts of second-degree assault, one count of fourth-degree criminal possession, and one count of endangering the welfare of a child, according to a Pix 11 report.

Mother Angela Persaud found out about the incident on Thursday when he yelled out during a bath, the Nassau County Police Department said. Persuad said she discovered a burn on his hand, and the boy reportedly told her the nanny caused it. Plus, she said home security footage proves Nxumalo put the iron against the boy’s hand and leg. You can see the footage above.

“I’m feeling devastated,” she told the outlet. “Like I feel like I failed him. I feel like I should’ve done a better job of protecting my kid.” As she tells it, she confronted Nxumalo after seeing the incident on tape. “We had it out, basically, and I told her, ‘You know what, you need to take a few minutes. Because I’m going to tell you what’s going to happen: Somebody’s going to jail tonight. It’s either me, or you. But somebody’s going to jail tonight, okay.’”

Persaud hired Nxumalo through Mom’s Helper, New York-area agency for nannies and housekeepers. She blamed them for sending her the accused assailant, and said they didn’t care about her family. We’ve reached out to the company for comment, and to learn whether she’s still associated with them.
