The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office in Florida held an extrodinary press conference Friday morning that is already receiving national attention and for it for something positive this time. It involves an 18-year-old mystery surrounding the abduction of a baby from a local hospital back in 1998 that has baffled investigators ever since, until today that is.
Sheriff Mike Williams told the media that the abducted baby had been found, alive, living in a town in South Carolina. Now 18-years-old, Kamiyah Mobley, was kidnapped on July 10, 1998 by a woman who posed as a nurse.
Surveillance video at the hospital captured a look at the suspected kidnapper, but police were unable to identify the woman and the case went cold.
Sheriff Williams said things picked back up due to a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Soon the FBI was involved and the search led them the small town Walterboro, South Carolina.
In an unbelievable turn of events, the Sheriff says they found the 18-year-old living in the town of about 5,000 residents under a new name.
According to Williams, Mobley is “ taking it as well as you can imagine.” He added, “She has a lot to process, she has a lot to think about.”
The Sheriff’s Office also reportedly believes Mobley may have known she was a possible kidnapping victim for sometime. Her birth mother was said to be “elated” to find out her long lost daughter was alive, but as an 18-year-old, it is now entirely up to Mobley as to whether she wants to have contact with her biological family.
An arrest warrant was issued for 51-year-old Gloria Williams and she has been charged with the kidnapping. She is in custody, awaiting extradition to Florida.
