Former Uber driver Jason Dalton stands trial in Kalamazoo County, Michigan for a 2016 shooting spree. Prosecutors say he killed six people and injured two others across three locations. The defendant faces six counts of murder, two counts of assault with intent to commit murder, and eight counts of felony firearm.
Authorities say Dalton first opened fire at a town home complex that evening, and injured 25-year-old Tiana Carruthers, according to MLive. Investigators said she protected the children.
He later opened fire outside of a local Cracker Barrel, taking the lives of 74-year-old Dorothy Brown, 63-year-old Mary Lou Nye, 60-year-old Mary Jo Nye, and 68-year-old Barbara Hawthorne, authorities said. A 14-year-old girl survived.
Dalton killed Richard Eugene Smith, 53, and the victim’s son Tyler, 17, at an auto dealership, investigators said.
The suspect was quickly identified as an Uber driver. Several customers claimed he had been driving erratically.
“I just had to get out of the car because I was scared,” Matt Mellen told 911, according to MLive. “He was driving 50, 60 miles per hour. He hit a car, he drove through the median. It was crazy.”
Dalton claimed the app made him go on his shooting spree, according to documents obtained by The Los Angeles Times. He allegedly said, “it feels like it is coming from the phone itself and he didn’t know how to describe that.” Deputies dragged him out of court in May 2016 after he spoke during Carruthers’ testimony, and she broke down crying.
Nonetheless, his attorney Eusebio Solis said they will not put up an insanity defense, adding that an independent evaluation determined he fell short of the legal requirements, according to CW7. Jurors will not hear his alleged confession because the defendant made it after calling for his attorney, judges ruled.
