4 Clinton Electors Opt to Vote for Colin Powell, and Faith Spotted Eagle Instead

ColinPowell via screengrabSo far the only “Faithless Electors” in the 2016 Election have been Democratic Electors who were supposed to vote for Hillary Clinton. In Washington State, 8 of the state’s 12 Democratic Electors voted for Clinton.  Four others refused to cast their vote for the Democratic Presidential nominee. Instead, 3 opted for Colin Powell, and the last elector cast his/her vote for Faith Spotted Eagle, a member of the Sioux Nation and an activist against the pipeline.

Three other Democratic Electors also tried to vote for other candidates but their votes were dismissed in Colorado, Maine and Minnesota.  So far, no Republican Electors have voted against Donald Trump, despite the intensive push prior to the Electoral College meeting to persuade GOP members to abandon the Republican nominee.

According Washington’s law , (RCW §29.71.020)/RCW 29A.56.340, a “faithless” elector “who votes for a person or persons not nominated by the party of which he or she is an elector is subject to a civil penalty of up to one thousand dollars.” No word yet if these electors will face consequences.
