Lawmaker Suggests ‘Quarantine’ of People with HIV

During a committee discussion about the rise of HIV and discrepancies between the quality of treatment in different parts of the state, Georgia State Rep. Betty Price suggested quarantining residents with the virus.

“My thinking sometimes goes in strange directions,” Price, a doctor and wife of former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, prefaced.

“I don’t want to say the quarantine word, but I guess I just said it,” Price said. “Is there an ability, since I would guess that public dollars are expended heavily in prophylaxis and treatment of this condition. So we have a public interest in curtailing the spread. What would you advise or are there any methods legally that we could do that would curtail the spread?”

The response didn’t address the quarantine idea, but rather focused on other planned and existing methods of curtailing the spread of HIV.
