Tennessee man Tremaine Wilbourn was found guilty Sunday of fatally shooting Memphis police officer Sean Bolton in August 2015. Now he faces a possible death sentence. Watch live in the player above.
According to cops, Wilbourn and another man were sitting in a car when Officer Bolton came over to them during a traffic stop, at which point Wilbourn allegedly shot and killed him. Police say Wilbourn then fled on foot, before carjacking someone else at gunpoint and driving off in that person’s vehicle. Jurors on Sunday convicted the defendant of first-degree murder, carjacking, employing a firearm in commission of a dangerous offense, and felon in possession of a firearm.
Wilbourn turned himself into the Memphis Police Department two days after he allegedly killed Officer Bolton. He was given a $10 million bond, according to local Fox 13 Memphis.
“It’s important to everyone in this community that this guy be caught,” Memphis Councilman Myron Lowery said before Wilbourn’s arrest. “He does not deserve to be on the streets.”
In 2017, Wilbourn pleaded guilty to federal charges in connection to the car theft. He was sentenced to more than 27 years behind bars on charges for carjacking and weapons possession.
