A women’s college basketball game turned ugly Saturday night and ultimately eight players were ejected after a brawl broke out late in the game, where punches were thrown and the benches cleared.
It all happened late in a game between UNLV and Utah State with just over a minute left in the third-quarter. Sports Illustrated described the incident as beginning on the play before when Utah State’s Deja Mason fouled UNLV’s Brooke Johnson hard as she tried to drive to the basket. Johnson reportedly hit the floor hard and that is when all hell quickly broke loose.
Katie Powell, of UNLV, attempted to help her teammate off the floor, but before she reached Johnson, she crossed paths with Utah State’s Antonia Robinson and the two women bumped into one another. The melee quickly ensued.
The next thing everyone seems to have seen was Robinson and Powell going at it, throwing a few punches until they both fell to the hardwood, well over in the corner of the court. Players from both teams were seen immediately rushing from their respective benches to either help get in the fight, or break it up.
When it was all said and done, Powell and Johnson were ejected from the game. Six more players — three from each team — were also sent into the locker rooms early after receiving ejections for leaving the bench during the game.
Even after eight ejections, the game continued to remain competitive, finally ending in overtime with UNLV prevailing 55-53.
