President Donald Trump addressed a gathering of law enforcement officials Wednesday morning, but took some time for a tangent on the legal battle over his travel ban. Trump recalled the statute that gives the President the power of “suspension of entry or imposition of restrictions” on aliens.
“Let me read something to you,” Trump said to the audience, “because you could be a lawyer, or you don’t have to be a lawyer; whether you were a good student in high school or a bad student in high school, you can understand this.” Trump then recalled the statute on “suspension of entry or imposition of restrictions by President.”
The law states, in 8 USC 1182(f):
Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.
Trump railed against the Ninth Circuit judges who grilled a DOJ lawyer regarding Trump’s travel ban during oral arguments on Tuesday. “They were talking about things that just had nothing to do this,” the President said, claiming that the law clearly gives him the authority to issue his executive order imposing travel restrictions on people coming into the United States.
