Appearing on CNN Thursday afternoon, journalist Carl Bernstein suggested that it makes sense if Attorney General Jeff Sessions was being “looked at” as part of the FBI’s probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
There is a possibility–and I don’t want to suggest that I know this is the case–but certainly there is the possibility that Jeff Sessions could be one of those who is being looked at, or may be looked at, as part of this criminal investigation. Doesn’t mean he’s done anything illegal, or that he’s the focus of anything, but he was the head of national security matters for the Trump campaign, and that may or may not figure in part of the FBI’s investigation, and we should keep it in mind. And I don’t want to the cast any aspersions only to say that it’s relevant, and one more reason why he should have recused himself perhaps even earlier than he did.
Sessions recused himself in March from involvement into the FBI’s investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election. U.S. intelligence officials have said since December that Moscow wanted Trump to win. That has caused complications for the AG, who was a big supporter of the President during the campaign.
On Wednesday, Sens. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Martin Heinrich (D-New Mexico), and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) wrote the Department of Justice, and told them to investigate Sessions. They believe the AG’s role in the firing of FBI Director James Comey possibly violated his recusal from the Russia probe.
Trump, Sessions, and spokespeople have emphatically denied wrongdoing. The President in particular blamed the Russia allegations on Democrats, and claimed this was just an excuse for poor results in the 2016 election.
