As previously reported, FBI Director James Comey appeared to have overstated how former Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin forwarded emails to husband Anthony Weiner‘s laptop for printing. Comey had said at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing last week that Abedin had sent “hundreds and thousands of emails,” some of which contained classified information, and that she had a “regular practice” of doing so. Sources told ProPublica that in reality, the number of emails was far less than “hundreds and thousands,” and that many of the documents could have ended up on Weiner’s computer while Abedin backed up her laptop.
On Tuesday, the FBI shed some light on the controversy. A letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee acknowledged that indeed, most of the data was transferred “as a result of a backup of personal electronic devices, with a small number a result of manual forwarding by Ms. Abedin to Mr. Weiner,” according to a report by Politico. The same letter said that Abedin only manually sent two email chains with classified information to Weiner’s account. The FBI did not specify whether the information was classified at the time.
