Both sides gave their closing arguments on Friday in the trial of Kristopher Torgerson, and now the case is in the hands of the jury. Torgerson is accused of intentionally killing Stephanie Low in October 2010. The Wisconsin woman was missing for years before her remains were found in 2014. Torgerson was the one who led authorities to Low’s body in a shallow grave, years after her alleged murder. Torgerson was believed to be at Low’s home looking for drugs, and Low and her boyfriend were known to sell cocaine.
The prosecution called nearly 40 witnesses over the course of the case. Among them were Torgerson’s then-girlfriend, Andrea Wadinski, who talked about how she led Torgerson to her mother’s cabin, where Low’s body was found. Also testifying was Richard Hawkins, who said that he helped Torgerson move Low’s body from her apartment into a car. He said that he and Torgerson then drove to the cabin and buried the body.
The defense, calling only four witnesses, mainly focused on discrediting the prosecution’s witnesses, particularly by pointing out how Wadinski and Hawkins changed their stories over the course of the investigation.
Torgerson could serve up to life in prison if he is convicted.
