Mother Could Get Jail Time for Refusing to Vaccinate Son

A legal battle between divorced parents over vaccinating their son could land the mother in jail. Rebecca Bredow of Dearborn, Michigan and her ex-husband Jason Horne have a difference of a opinion over the care of their son, which has resulted in a lawsuit that’s been going on since last year.

Bredow is reluctant to have their son receive vaccinations. She wasn’t always apprehensive about them, she told WXYZ. “It wasn’t until they started grouping them together that I backed off of doing vaccines.” She says that she and Jason originally agreed to delay vaccinations, but now she wants to waive them altogether, against the child’s father’s wishes. Rebecca says she reached her decision after reviewing various studies articles. Michigan allows parents to apply for a vaccination waiver for medical, religious, or personal philosophical reasons.

Still, the judge in Oakland County Circuit Court is siding with the father, and issued a court order requiring Rebecca to get their son vaccinated. If she doesn’t do it by next week, she will go to jail for disobeying the order, the local news outlet reported.

Until that day comes, Bredow is looking into how she can possibly avoid jail time, but she doesn’t appear to be backing down on her anti-vax position.

“I would rather sit behind bars standing up for what I believe in, than giving in to something I strongly don’t believe in,” she said.
