3 Years After Claiming Self-Defense, She Turned Herself in For Shooting Man She Met on FarmersOnly.com

A woman from Fayetteville, N.C., who met a man on the dating website FarmersOnly.com has turned herself in three years later now faces a murder charge.

The story goes that Sheri Jones and Clarence Smith met on the dating website known for its distinct TV jingle and farmer love-centric mission in 2015 and that things fell apart after a couple of months of dating.

ABC 11 reported that Jones and Smith dated for a couple of months, but were not getting along at the time of the shooting and were going to break up.

Cumberland County Sheriff Ennis W. Wright announced in a news release what led to Jones’ arrest.

He said that on June 10, 2015 a 911 call was made from the scene of a shooting in Fayetteville. It happened at a home and the victim was found “lying in the front yard motionless.” From the beginning, Jones said she was the one who shot the 61-year-old man, but she claimed self-defense.

“Jones said she called Smith to have him come to her house to pick up his things. The investigation revealed that 57 year old Jones met 61 year old Smith on the Farmers Only dating website, and the two started dating a couple months prior to Smith’s death,” Wright said. “The two were not getting along and were separating when the shooting occurred.”

Three years later, the story has changed. Jones turned herself in at the Cumberland County Detention Center on Monday and now faces a first-degree murder charge.
