NYE Prank Suspected as Famous Hollywood Sign Now Reads ‘Hollyweed’

The famous Hollywood sign was changed overnight to read “Hollyweed” and authorities are saying they suspect at least one prankster was involved.

According to CBS LA, authorities are calling it an “act of trespass” after at least one person managed to climb the mountain that includes the iconic Hollywood sign and altered the two “O’s” to read as “E’s,” spelling out “Hollyweed.”

Sgt. Trudeau of Security Services told the news station the incident occurred around midnight.  Police are viewing it as an act of misdemeanor trespass and likely as some sort of prank.  Security footage surrounding the sign is currently being reviewed by officers, according to local reports.

CBS LA even has a livestream feed up on Facebook, at one point over 100k viewers were watching:

This is apparently not the first time vandals have struck the sign.  The report states back on Jan. 1, 1976, the sign was altered to also read “Hollyweed,” in response to a new marijuana law taking effect in the state.

It now appears as though crews have started to repair the sign to replace the altered “O’s.”

This is a breaking story and LawNewz.com will provide updates as they become available throughout the day.
