Opening statements are expected today in the Florida trial of a woman accused of stabbing her ex-boyfriend to death. Melanie Eam, currently 22, was 20 when authorities say she killed her then-21-year-old boyfriend. James Barry died November 17, 2016 in Loxahatchee, Palm Beach County. After the stabbing, authorities say Eam fled to a relative’s residence in Maryland. There, authorities say she confessed to stabbing Barry and provided the police with clothing she wore during the alleged crime.

Eam’s defense team unsuccessfully attempted to suppress the confession from the trial.

Eam faces one charge of second-degree murder while in possession of a weapon. She is not charged with first-degree murder, which in Florida requires premeditation or a series of other special circumstances.
