Video from Saturday night shows the moment when a Sacramento County deputy’s vehicle hit a demonstrator who was protesting the shooting of unarmed black man Stephon Clark. You can see it happen beginning at 0:24 in the footage above. The vehicle appars stationary at first, then moves forward while the protester was still standing in front.
“Oh my God!” yelled a bystander.
Clark’s shooting death by local police on March 18 sparked recurring protests after it was revealed that he was unarmed. An autopsy commissioned by an attorney for his family reportedly showed that he was shot in the back and side. This showed that he was not a threat to officers, said the lawyer.
Protesters continued yesterday, and a witness put the blame for the traffic incident on deputies. She told KCRA that the driver “decided he was in a hurry, and hit one of the protesters who was on the curbside of the street, and then ran.”
A press release from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department said it was protesters who were aggressive, surrounding the SUV and another SCSD vehicle, pounding and kicking the vehicles. They said the protester sustained minors injuries, and the collision happened at a slow speed.
Deputies said vandals scratched and dented the vehicle, and broke the rare window. The SCSD and California High Patrol are investigating this incident.
