(1) Does the state require everyone to report child abuse, including sex abuse? No.
(2) Does the law require coaches to report child abuse? No. However, licensed school employees are required to report.
(3) Does the law require college staff to report child abuse? No. Though licensed school employees are required to report, that requirement is arguably not broad enough to cover college or university employees, who generally do not face the same licensing requirements as K-12 school employees. The mandatory reporting law does not expressly define who is and is not a “licensed school employee.”
(4) Does the law allow jail time for those who fail to properly report abuse? Yes; the penalty is a simple misdemeanor, which is punishable by up to 30 days in jail and a fine of between $65 and $625.
