Jill Stein Raises $3.8 Million For Presidential Election Recount in Key Swing States

Jill Stein (Gage Skidmore at Wikimedia Commons)Stemming from reports that various political and computer scientists have urged Hillary Clinton to demand recounts of the presidential votes in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania due to potential irregularities, donations are pouring in to fund the tabulation. The Clinton campaign is not doing the fundraising, though, and hasn’t even commented on the reports. Instead, Green Party Candidate Jill Stein has launched a fundraising effort on her website (you can donate here) and is, as of this writing, has brought in $3.8 million  of the $4.5 million goal.

The recount drive was launched on the campaign’s Facebook page with a video from Campaign Manager David Cobb:

On Stein’s website, it says “Our effort to recount votes in those states is not intended to help Hillary Clinton,” adding that “These recounts are part of an election integrity movement to attempt to shine a light on just how untrustworthy the U.S. election system is.” Clinton trended 7% lower than expected in counties with electronic voting machines, but an article at FiveThirtyEight suggests that the discrepancy disappears when the data is adjusted for various demographic differences.

Stein also appeared on CNN on Thursday to discuss the recount campaign, largely reiterating the points from the internet posts:

Meanwhile, Kellyanne Conway, Trump’s campaign manager, took to Twitter to criticize the calls for recounts:
