Closing arguments are underway in New York City on Monday morning in the Yoselyn Ortega trial, the 55-year-old nanny accused of murdering 6-year-old Lucia Krim and 2-year-old Leo Krim, both children she cared for.

While the prosecution says that Ortega plotted to stab the children to death in their luxury apartment home in October 2012 to get back at their mother, Marina Krim, the defense argues that Ortega is not guilty by reason of insanity.

On that fateful day, Marina Krim came home and found Ortega stabbing herself in the neck. She saw her standing over her children in the bathtub, where they were stabbed to death.

The defense is arguing that Ortega was, as Reuters reported, too psychotic to understand what she was doing.

“Her body, her mind separated metaphysically,” Ortega’s defense attorney Valerie Van Leer-Greenberg could be heard saying in court on Monday.

One way or another, Ortega could be put away for life. If convicted, she would go to prison for the rest of her days. If found not guilty by reason of insanity, she could spend the rest of her life in a mental facility.
