President Donald Trump‘s Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh will officially respond to allegations of attempted sexual assault made by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford.
Ford accused a drunken Kavanaugh of forcing her into a room at house party 36 years ago, groping her and attempting to remove her clothes as his friend Mark Judge watched. Ford sent a confidential letter to Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) at the end of July 2018, but the allegation did not surface until after Kavanaugh had already been grilled by Senate Judiciary Committee members on a number of other aspects of his past, including his time investigating Bill Clinton and his years working in the George W. Bush White House.
There are a couple of things to expect heading into the hearing. For one, the Senate Judiciary Committee has hired experienced sex crimes prosecutor Rachel Mitchell to question both Kavanaugh and Ford. Secondly, Kavanaugh and Ford will be questioned by Mitchell separately before the committee. Thirdly, named alleged witnesses of the incident, such as Mark Judge, will be not making appearances.
The Senate Judiciary Committee has up to now been committed to limiting Thursday’s testimony to Kavanaugh and Ford, even though two other women, Deborah Ramirez and Julie Swetnick, have recently linked Kavanaugh to indecent exposure and alleged “gang rape” activity.
Kavanaugh on Wednesday released a copy of prepared remarks in advance of his testimony before the committee.
