‘I Feel Like My Heart Is Going to Stop’: Family Mourns Elderly Victim Killed in Video Put on Facebook

Police in Ohio say 37-year-old Steve Stephens recorded himself murdering 74-year-old Robert Godwin Sr. seemingly at random, and then posted the footage to Facebook. It has Godwin’s family reeling.

Two people, identified as relatives, spoke with Cleveland 19 on Sunday. Video can be seen above.

“He’s a good guy [Godwin],” one man said. “Give you the shirt off his back. I’m not just saying that for these cameras like people do knowing that their people really ain’t right, but I’m telling the truth. This man right here was a good man. I hate that he’s gone. I don’t know what I’m going to do. It’s not real.”

Another relative, a woman, hugged his side throughout the interview.

“It feels like my heart is going to stop,” she said, broken up, and repeating herself. The man led her away.

The victim’s son, Robert Godwin Jr., told The Associated Press that he can’t bring himself to watch the video of his father’s death. He’s even avoided the news, and looking at his cellphone.

“I don’t really want to see it,” he said.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Stephens claimed on a separate Facebook video to have killed more than a dozen people, the Cleveland Division of Police says. That claim remains unverified.

In a Monday morning press release, they describe Stephens as a black male, “6’1 244 bald with a full beard. Wearing dark blue and grey or black striped polo shirt. Driving a white Ford Fusion with a temp tag. Armed and dangerous. If seen call 9-1-1. Do not approach.”
