Is actress Rose McGowan guilty of possessing cocaine? A judge in Leesburgs, Virginia ruled Thursday that there is at least probable cause, according to WTOP. The case has been sent to a grand jury, who is scheduled to hear evidence on Friday, May 11.
“Today was not about the defense’s case,” said attorney Jessica Carmichael, with McGowan at her side outside the courthouse. “We have strong evidence, a good case. We still have a lot of faith in the justice system. We have a lot of faith in 12 citizens of Virginia who will get to hear what happened for real.”
McGowan turned herself in last November after cops got an arrest warrant on her for possession of a controlled substance. Prince County prosecutors said she left behind her wallet on a flight arriving at Washington Dulles International Airport on January 20, 2017. Cleaning crew found it, and it was later determined that the wallet contained cocaine.
On Thursday, police detective J.C. Hughes testified that he contacted McGowan about her wallet. She asked it be left at the baggage claim. Hughes, who knew about the coke allegedly found in the wallet, told her she could pick it up at the police station in the airport.
She never did, even after agreeing to drop by.
McGowan’s defense: This case was only brought because she was a public figure, and she suggested it was planted. By who? Maybe someone employed by disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.
McGowan is just one of dozens of women–actresses, models, and staffers–who publicly accused him of sexual misconduct. In McGowan’s case, he allegedly raped her. According to a New Yorker article from November, private investigators working for Weinstein took on false identities, and met with the actress in order to extract information from her, and secretly record her in attempt to get ahead of sexual misconduct claims against the mogul.
“It was like the movie ‘Gaslight,’” she the outlet. “Everyone lied to me all the time.”
