Roy Moore‘s chief political strategist said Sunday that he “highly doubts” there will be a Senate ethics investigation into allegations of preying on teen girls.
“Judge Moore is going to go to Washington, Judge Moore is going to win, and I highly doubt there’s going to be a Senate investigation,” Dean Young said on This Week. “But if there is, Judge Moore is going to be found telling the truth, just like he always has.”
Moore’s up for a U.S. Senate seat in Alabama come a special election scheduled for Tuesday. Normally, he’d easily take the victory by virtue of being the Republican candidate in a red state. But The Washington Post published articles about him allegedly seeking relationships with teen girls as an adult. One alleged victim, Leigh Corfman, said he sexually assaulted her when she was 14. The claims caught traction. This, understandably, dinged his campaign.
Moore denied allegations, calling the story a smear job by WaPo and the Democratic Party. (Corfman said she voted for Republicans in the last three presidential elections.) Many local Republican politicians maintained their support, but national leaders including Sen. Mitch McConnell distanced themselves. An ethics investigation into Moore would continue a pattern of friction between him and other Senate GOPers.
But McConnell side-stepped questions about whether he will face the ethics committee, or whether they think he should.
“The Ethics Committee makes those decisions about whether behavior prior to the Senate is relevant or not, they’ll decide the parameters, if you will, of their jurisdiction,” he told Face the Nation last week. He later told reporters that Moore would face an “immediate ethics issue” if sworn in.
