A Dem lawmaker says people in her office were targeted in phishing attacks, and authorities are investigating.
“There has been one situation that we have turned over to authorities to look into,” said New Hampshire Senior Senator Jeanne Shaheen on Face the Nation. “And we’re hearing that this is widespread with political parties across the country, as well as with members of the Senate. So this is a very big issue and it’s something that we need to address in a bipartisan way. It affects both Republicans and Democrats. It’s about the security of our political process and our government functions and we need to work together to address it.”
She did not specify who the alleged attackers were.
This comes after Missouri’s Claire McCaskill, a Dem senator, said Thursday that Russians unsuccessfully tried to hack into her computer network.
“Russia continues to engage in cyber warfare against our democracy. I will continue to speak out and press to hold them accountable,” McCaskill said in a statement obtained by The Daily Beast. “While this attack was not successful, it is outrageous that they think they can get away with this. I will not be intimidated. I’ve said it before and I will say it again, Putin is a thug and a bully.”
A special counsel is investigating Kremlin interference in the 2016 presidential election, and results in indictments for Russian nationals, including 12 alleged members of military intelligence for hacking into the computer systems of the Democratic National Committee, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and the Clinton campaign. In a report declassified in January 2017, U.S. intelligence officials said Moscow got involved in the election to help Donald Trump win.
The Republican president denies allegations his campaign colluded with Russia, calling this a “witch hunt” by Democrats.
His Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and other officials have denied interfering in the U.S. election.
