Man Charged After Viral Video Allegedly Showed Him Kicking Elderly Woman

A man seen on viral footage attacking a 78-year-old woman has been identified and arrested, say police in New York City.

“The subject wanted for the brutal subway attack of an elderly woman IS IN CUSTODY,” said Chief of Detectives Dermot F. Shea on Saturday. “The victim was treated & released from the hospital & is getting the care, advocacy & support needed.”

Marc Gomez was arrested, accused of being the man in the footage, according to The New York Post. His lawyer said in court on Sunday that the woman had threatened to stab him with a knife. A former neighbor of the woman told the outlet she was mentally ill and had threatened others with a knife in the past.

None of the alleged threat was apparent in video posted Thursday to Twitter.

The man, identified by authorities as Gomez, could be seen in the footage attacking a woman sitting on a Subway train. He then kicked her twice in the face and four times in the midsection.

“The fuck you is talking to?” he said. Before leaving the train, he turned toward people recording the incident on their phones and said, “World Star that, my n——.”

Police said the incident happened March 10 at about 3:10 a.m. on a 2 train at the Nereid Avenue Station in the Bronx.

A GoFundMe campaign has been started on behalf of the woman. It had collected $1,165 of its $10,000 goal as of Sunday morning.

Gomez was charged with felony assault, and held in lieu of $30,000 bail.
