(1) Does the state require everyone to report child abuse, including sex abuse? No, but the list of mandated reporters is broad.
(2) Does the law require coaches to report child abuse? Yes. “Any athletic coach, director or other person 18 years of age or older employed by or volunteering with a private sports organization or team” must report suspected abuse.
(3) Does the law require college staff to report child abuse? Yes.
(4) Does the law allow jail time for those who fail to properly report abuse? Yes; the penalty for failing to report is a fine of up to $500. If the abuse is severe, the penalty is a Class 1 Misdemeanor, which can include up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $2,500.
