Attorney and Trump ally Joseph DiGenova says the president won’t participate in Special Counsel Robert Mueller‘s probe into Russian collusion, saying the investigation is in “bad faith.”
“The President will not sit down for an interview because this investigation has now reached a level of bad faith,” he told Fox News Sunday. “This is no longer a good faith investigation. The tactics, the in terrorem tactics, that Mueller has used against Michael Cohen, against Manafort, demonstrate a lack of good faith.”
Mueller is running a probe of Russian interference in the 2016 election, and that includes whether the Trump campaign was involved in such efforts. The president and his allies consistently call it a “witch hunt.” Meanwhile, Trump lawyer Michael Cohen is facing possible criminal charges, with his home, office, and hotel getting raided last month by the FBI. Mueller is not running the Cohen investigation, but referred the matter to other prosecutors, who are looking into possible bank fraud and campaign finance violations.
DiGenova, one of the president’s most ardent boosters on cable news, isn’t part of the Trump legal team in the the special counsel probe, but he almost was. He and his wife Victoria Toensing, both attorneys, were announced to be joining, but that got canceled. Trump personal lawyer Jay Sekulow said it was due to “conflicts.”
“However, those conflicts do not prevent them from assisting the president in other legal matters,” Sekulow said, according to The New York Times. “The president looks forward to working with them.”
