Travis Reinking, the suspect accused of killing four people and injuring more at a Tennessee Waffle House in April, is set to appear in court Wednesday afternoon. Medical experts previously determined that Reinking is unfit to stand trial after he received a mental evaluation, and the judge is expected to issue a ruling on the matter. Reinking faces four counts of criminal homicide and four counts of attempted homicide for the attack, which claimed the lives of 29-year-old Taurean C. Sanderlin, 20-year-old Joe R. Perez, 21-year-old DeEbony Groves, and 23-year-old Akilah Dasilva. Reinking allegedly entered the Waffle House wearing nothing but a jacket, which he later took off. He allegedly used an AR-15 semi-automatic weapon that he got from his father, according to the Metro Nashville Police. James Shaw Jr., 29, was credited with wrestling the gun away from Reinking.
The family of Joe Perez sued Reinking’s father Jeffrey Reinking earlier this year, alleging that he wrongfully gave guns to Travis that had previously been taken away from him by authorities. The confiscation happened after Travis Reinking was arrested by the United States Secret Service for allegedly entering a restricted area near the White House and saying he needed to see President Donald Trump.
The weapons were later returned to Jeffrey.
Prosecutors have supported the argument that Reinking is currently unfit for trial and requires “judicial hospitalization” until he is deemed fit. In the meantime, he would receive medical treatment.
