Infamous rap mogul Marion Hugh “Suge” Knight, 53, was sentenced to 28 years in prison on Thursday for a 2015 hit-and-run, according to Fox 32 Chicago.
Prosecutors say he ran over two men–Cle “Bone” Sloan and Terry Carter–with his truck outside a Compton restaurant on the set of the film Straight Outta Compton. Sloan survived with injuries, but Carter passed away. He was 55. Knight fled the scene, authorities claim.
Knight pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter, with a special allegation that he used a deadly weapon. Prosecutors had first gone after him for murder. No contest means that he didn’t admit guilt. In return, two criminal cases were to be dropped against him. One, for alleged threats in August 2014, and another for an alleged camera theft in September 2014.
Prosecutors said he would have received 11 years in prison for the voluntary manslaughter count, but he had a prior conviction under California’s three strike law. That means the term would be doubled. He also got five more years for this being a serious and violent felony, and another year for the deadly weapon allegation.
Knight, the co-founder of Death Row records, cycled through more than a dozen attorneys on the road to his sentencing hearing.
“These attorneys, nobody in the world would use these attorneys for a jaywalking ticket!” Knight reportedly said in court last March, after the 15th lawyer dropped out because of a conflict of interest.
