Two 14-year-old boys are in custody after police say they stole a front loader and led police on a dangerous chase than ended with gunfire early Monday morning on Maine Turnpike.
WGME News 13 reports investigators say the incident began just before 5:00 a.m. on Monday morning when they received calls about a front loader destroying mailboxes and fire hydrants.
The operators of the front loader refused officers demands to stop, instead leading police on a scary chase that ended up in the lanes of oncoming traffic on the Maine Turnpike. Police say the operators of the front loader swerved in and out of traffic and struck a police cruiser. After another motorist’s vehicle was also hit, police say they decided to end the chase and an officer fired shots at the tires on the front loader.
The two teens were taken into custody by officers and charges are currently pending. Officers from multiple police departments are involved in the investigation.
