Democrats haven’t been shy about their readiness to fight the nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, and the confirmation process hasn’t even started. But Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer indicated that there may be a way that Gorsuch could win them over.
In a brief chat with TMZ, Schumer addressed President Trump’s travel ban, and whether Gorsuch’s stance on it could have an impact on his chances. “It’s a big game changer,” Schumer said. “Given the overreach of President Trump, his lack of respect for rule of law and the Constitution, we need a strong and independent justice … the burden of proof is on Gorsuch to prove that he is.”
So now there may at least be a chance for Gorsuch to get some Democrats on his side, depending on whether or not he believes the ban violates the Constitution. Either way, he can probably expect some questions about this at his confirmation hearing.
