Eight people are dead, and the suspect says he did it. Mississippi man Cory Godbolt told The Clarion-Ledger he killed a sheriff’s deputy and others after a family argument.
The reporter asked the handcuffed Godbolt, sitting on the street and surrounded by authorities, what was next for him.
“Death,” he said. “My intentions was to have ya’ll to kill me. I ran out of bullets.”
“It’s a good thing they showed mercy,” the reporter said.
“Suicide by cop was my intention,” he said. “I ain’t fit to live. Not after what I’ve done. Not in your eyes, and not in nobody else’s eyes, but God, he forgives you for everything.”
The victims’ names have not been released by authorities.
Godbolt is being held for a shooting spree in three Lincoln County homes. He told The Clarion-Ledger it happened after he was at a residence talking to his wife, her mother, and step-father about him taking his children. Someone who didn’t live at the house called 911 and a sheriff deputy’s arrived, he said.
This law enforcement office ended up as one of the victims, Godbolt said: “My pain wasn’t designed for him. He was just there.”
Charges have yet to be filed, and the investigation is ongoing.
