(1) Does the state require everyone to report child abuse, including sex abuse? Yes. “Any person or institution” must report.

(2) Does the law require coaches to report child abuse? Yes, because “any person or institution” must report.

(3) Does the law require college staff to report child abuse? Yes, because “any person or institution” must report.

(4) Does the law allow jail time for those who fail to properly report abuse? Yes; the penalty is a Class 1 Misdemeanor, which is punishable by 1 to 120 days of “active, intermediate, or community punishment.” A fine can also be assessed in any amount the court deems appropriate.

Notes:  North Carolina law also prohibits obstructing or interfering with an investigation.
