Conservative Twitter Blasts Librarian For Rejecting Melania Trump’s Dr. Seuss Gift

A librarian at a school in Cambridge, Massachusetts is under fire for rejecting a gift from First Lady Melania Trump.

In honor of National Read a Book Day, the First Lady sent 10 Dr. Seuss books to a school in every state, including such classics as The Cat in the Hat, One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, Green Eggs and Ham, and Oh, the Places You’ll Go!,  but Liz Phipps Soeiro of Cambridgeport Elementary School wrote an open letter rejecting the books. Not only did she say that her school has no “need” for them because her school “has plenty of resources, which contributes directly to excellence” and that her students “have access to a school library with over nine thousand volumes and a librarian with a graduate degree in library science,” but that the illustrations in Dr. Seuss’s books “are steeped in racist propaganda, caricatures, and harmful stereotypes.”

The office of Melania Trump responded Soeiro, saying “To turn the gesture of sending young students some books into something divisive is unfortunate.”

Conservative Twitter wasn’t nearly as kind.

Soeiro didn’t help her cause when photos of her dressed up as The Cat in The Hat surfaced online.
