Joshua Phillips, now 32, was convicted in the 1998 murder of his 8-year-old neighbor Maddie Clifton.

Phillips was 14-years-old and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.

The U.S. Supreme Court has since ruled that it is cruel and unusual punishment for a juvenile to get a mandatory sentence of life without parole.

In 1988 Phillips killed 8-year-old Clifton and hid her body under his bed.
