A sentencing hearing will take place on Thursday to determine the fate of Anissa Weier, one of two teenage girls who were charged in the stabbing of classmate Payton Leutner in 2014. Weier and Morgan Geyser claimed they carried out the attack to appease the Slender Man, a fictional horror character. In September, a jury found that Weier suffered from a mental disease and should not go to prison. Instead, she will be committed to a mental health facility. How long she ends up spending there will be up to a Waukesha County Circuit Court judge. The hearing is scheduled to begin at 2:30 pm ET/1:30 pm CT. Watch live in the player above.
Weier and Morgan Geyser were both charged in the attack. Neither one denied their roles in the stabbing, with both luring their classmate to a park before Geyser stabbed her 19 times. The reason they had given was that they feared that the Slender Man would hurt them and their families if they didn’t kill the other girl. The classmate survived the stabbing.
The judge is expected to sentence Weier, who was 12 at the time of the attack, to at least three years at a facility.
Geyser reached a deal with prosecutors where she will also be treated at a mental health facility instead of going to prison, and she will be sentenced in February.
