Trump Expected to Sign Order Withdrawing From TPP, NAFTA Renegotiation to Follow

President Donald Trump is reportedly looking to follow through on one of his campaign promises during his first full week in office. CNN reported that, according to sources, Trump will sign an executive order on Monday withdrawing the U.S. from Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations. The controversial trade agreement, known as TPP, was often cited by Trump on the campaign trail as being potentially harmful to American interests.

The TPP is a massive trade agreement that was being negotiated between the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Peru, Chile, Japan, Australia, Singapore, Vietnam, New Zealand, Malaysia, and Brunei. According to NBC, Trump plans on having individual negotiations with the countries involved, instead of joining the far-reaching agreement, which covered a vast number of areas including intellectual property, labor, and telecommunications.

Another trade agreement that Trump often criticized, NAFTA, is also expected to be a subject of significant discussion in the administration’s infancy. Trump plans to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto to renegotiate the deal.
