Disgraced sports doctor Lawrence Nassar received a sentence Wednesday of 40 to 175 years in prison—way more than the 40-to-125 years that prosecutors asked for. That’s because of the many, many victim impact statements given this past week. Women and girls told the court how Nassar used his role as a doctor with Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics to abuse them.

Some speakers went by their names. Some couldn’t make it to court, and had their statements delivered by prosecutors or loved ones. Others chose to remain anonymous. Others yet didn’t want their statements even broadcast in media outlets. In any case, their voices contributed to what will be a virtual life sentence for the 54-year-old Nassar.
