The family of Korryn Gaines won their lawsuit Friday, after a jury determined that an officer violated her civil rights by shooting and killing her, and injuring her son.
Gaines was shot and killed by police August 1, 2016. Cops said she no-showed a court date for driving without a license, and she showed up at the door with a 12-gauge shotgun. The six-hour standoff ended after Gaines allegedly pointed her firearm at an officer, threatening to kill him. She was shot and killed, and her then-5-year-old son Kodi was also injured.
Gaines broadcast the standoff on Facebook Live.
Charges were not filed against the officers, but the family sued Baltimore County. They said Police Department Officer First Class Royce Ruby violated her civil rights by opening fire. Plaintiffs argued that it was unlawful for officers to enter Gaines’ apartment building by obtaining a key from the building’s management.
