Donald Trump Hires Top GOP Lawyer to Advise Campaign on Delegate Selection Process

trump arms outDonald Trump added another top GOP insider to his campaign team on Monday with the hiring of William McGinley, a politically connected D.C. attorney with a vast knowledge of the inner workings of the Republican Party and the delegate selection process.

According to Politico, McGinley previously served as counsel to the convention’s rules committee in 2012 where he pressured the credentials committee, which determines the delegates who will be seated at the convention, to drop 10 delegates from Maine that were aligned with Ron Paul in exchange for 10 delegates that supported Mitt Romney.  McGinley also spent time in the past as deputy counsel to the Republican National Committee (RNC), and as counsel to the RNC Standing Committee on Rules.

His connections and past experience should prove useful to the Trump campaign, who Politico says hired McGinley to advise the campaign on delegate selection matters and to formulate a strategy to challenge the credentials of delegates at the Republican National Convention this summer in Cleveland, OH.  Sources close to the campaign also told Politico that McGinley’s first assignment on behalf of the Trump campaign will be to attend a meeting with RNC members this week in Florida where preliminary discussions are expected to place about the rules that will govern the convention.

In the past month, the Trump campaign has made an effort to add more experienced and well connected political operatives to the team ahead of what is shaping up to be a contested convention this summer in Cleveland. Paul Manafort was recently brought on to serve as the campaign’s convention manager and Rick Wiley was named as the campaign’s national political director.
