In an interview, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, an Obama administration holdover, said he is satisfied thus far with the work of Special Counsel Robert Mueller‘s investigation into possible links between the Donald Trump campaign and the Russian Government.
His comments are important because, under current regulations, Rosenstein is the only person who would have the authority to fire special counsel Mueller. There are rumors swirling that Trump is deeply unsatisfied with the course of the investigation, and considering trying to force Mueller out.
“When we conduct criminal investigation — just as was true in Maryland — we don’t talk about the investigation its ongoing,” Rosenstein told a reporter with the local NBC station in Washington D.C. “So what the American people will see is only if and when a case is charged. And there are several cases that have been charged to date.”
Earlier this week, it was announced that Flynn pleaded guilty after being charged with lying to FBI agents about his conversations with the Russian Ambassador. Former Trump national security advisor George Papadopoulus also copped a plea in the Russia investigation. Both Flynn and Papadopoulus are said to be cooperating with authorities. Manafort, who once served as Trump’s campaign manager, also faced a slew of charges related to his work with the Ukraine. At this point, the Manafort case doesn’t have any direct ties to the Trump campaign.
