Roy Moore Once Stabbed Himself With Knife During Murder Trial

Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore is currently trying to fight off allegations that he had sexual encounters with underage girls when he was in his 30s, but this is hardly the first time he’s made the news. While the former judge’s past exploits include hanging a homemade plaque of the Ten Commandments in his courtroom and, more recently, referring to “abortion and sodomy” as blights brought on the U.S. as divine punishment, there’s another tidbit that gained him some notoriety in his younger days.

When Moore was an assistant district attorney in Gadsden County, Alabama, he prosecuted a murder case, and in a dramatic demonstration for the jury, he accidentally stabbed himself with the alleged murder weapon.

According to an article in the now-defunct Birmingham News obtained by Law&Crime, Moore thrusted the weapon towards himself, cutting his clothing and himself in the process.

It gets better. The jury couldn’t reach a unanimous conclusion, so the case went to a second trial. This time around, Moore cut himself when he picked up the knife. The other attorneys in the courtroom had a good chuckle, and the jurors couldn’t believe what they just saw.

He got a conviction that time, but a judge later humorously put up a sign forbidding Moore from handling weapons.

These days a self-inflicted knife wound would be the least of Moore’s problems.
